Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon

Dr. Tan Yong Seng is a Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic and
Vascular Surgeon at the Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre and
Gleneagles Medical Centre. He was previously Director of the
Heart Lung Transplant Program at the National Heart Centre,
a Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the National
Heart Centre, a Visiting Consultant to the National University
Hospital, and a Visiting Consultant to the Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
He is also a Visiting Associate Professor at Nanyang Technological
University.
He received his MBBS from the National University of Singapore
(1984) with distinctions in Biochemistry and Microbiology,
and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh)
(1988), the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (1995), the International
College of Surgeons (USA) (2006) and the American College
of Cardiology (2006). Dr. Tan also was a Clinical Fellow in
Cardiovascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, USA (1992) and
at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, USA (1993).
Dr. Tan has extensive experience in adult cardiac surgery
including coronary artery bypass surgery, mitral and aortic
valve surgery, surgery for aortic aneurysm, heart transplants,
various heart assist devices, and heart failure surgery. In
addition he also performs general thoracic and vascular surgery.
He has published extensively in peer-reviewed local and international
journals and has spoken at conferences in China, Malaysia,
Thailand and USA.
His research interests include haemostatic genes in coronary
heart diseases, design of a control strategy for postoperative
hypertension and the design and assessment of a new sleeve
technique for minimally invasive coronary artery bypassing
grafting.
Besides being a heart surgeon, Dr Tan is also a strong advocate
for the 3 “P” Medicine. 3P Medicine is an acronym for “Predictive,
Preventive and Personalized Health Care Management. Dr Tan
aspires to be the doctor of the future. “The doctor of the
future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients
in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and
prevention of disease?”
Dr Tan is also a board member of Singapore Heart Foundation.
He is frequently invited to give Heart Health Talk to general
public, senior citizens and many corporate organizations in
Singapore.
In addition to his busy clinical workload, Dr Tan is also
actively involved in community events and currently serves
as a member with Whampoa Citizen’s Consultative Committee.
He is also a leader of Whampoa Community Health Subgroup.
